FLUTE 101: MASTERING

THE FLUTE SCALE BOOK: A PATH TO ARTISTRY,
written by Patricia George and Phyllis Avidan Louke, includes the teacher's and performer's
"dream list" of scale studies. Besides the scales, there is a chapter on "what to do with
the notes" once you have learned them. Also
included are Practice Guides with hundreds of rhythms and articulation patterns to practice any group of six or eight notes
and Sample Practice Plans that provide an organized curriculum with weekly practice suggestions. THE FLUTE
SCALE BOOK is designed for a lifetime of use with embouchure development and scale exercises perfect for younger players,
and more advanced exercises including audition scales, phrasing studies, major and minor scales, thirds, arpeggios, seventh
chords, modal scales, chromatic intervals, tonguing exercises and more, extended to D4 and beyond, to satisfy the needs of
professional players.
The 132 page book includes:
- Chapter 1, One Octave Whole Note Scales. These scales, thirds and arpeggios are perfect
for the younger player, but also serve as tone color and intonation exercises for the advanced player.

2, Phrasing Gestures, focuses on what to do with the notes once you have learned them.
- Chapter 3, Embouchure Development, contains exercises for embouchure development
and technical fluency in the third octave.
- Chapter
4, Audition Scales, features all major and minor scales, thirds and arpeggios for the auditioning student.
A practice guide suggests phrasing and articulation patterns for audition success.
- Chapter 5, Scales for a Lifetime, presents the essential materials needed
to develop a fluid technique. These include five note patterns, tone color scales, modal scales in thirds
and sixths, Kuhlau Bass, pedal point arpeggios and seventh chords. Most scales are written full range from
C1 to D4 with a few higher surprises along the way.
- Chapter
6, A Bouquet of Scales, includes two octave modal scales in 4s, 6s and 8s. Chromatic scales are
written in two and three octave versions as well as in Major seconds, Major and minor thirds, Perfect Fourths and Fifths.
