Balancing the Flute

In your practice today, try to think of "balancing" the flute, rather than "holding" the flute.   Patricia George

Staccato

Ask a student what "staccato" means and 9 times out of 10 he will say "short."

Actually staccato means "detached."  It will be detached from the proceeding note to the following note.  To execute this, the note before the staccato note must be shortened in length.   Patricia George

Breathing

When I first began to study with William Kincaid, I asked him about breathing.  His answer:  YES, I DO IT!  What wonderful advice.  Most of us think of the breathing cycle as IN and OUT; however, if you reverse the process, OUT and then IN, you will find that you have a much more organizad breath.  The breath is the key to wonderful flute playing.   Patricia George

Learning music quickly
If you want to learn a passage really quickly, practice the passage in one inch chunks with a rest in between each chunk, three times a day at six hour intervals for a week.  Then put the chunks together.  Each chunk should be practiced in performance tempo.  This method is rather like making a quilt.  If each quilt piece (chunk) is perfect, then the whole quilt will be square.   Patricia George
